What is the Cloud ?

The Cloud

At inTEC, we are experts in all-things Cloud, supporting organisations across the country to achieve more by harnessing the full potential of cutting-edge cloud solutions.

We can tell you all about how the Cloud can make your team more collaborative, your data more secure and your workplace more productive – but in this post, we would first like to take a step back and cast some light on a concept which can be tricky to see clearly. Ultimately, there’s no waiting for the Cloud to pass, so make sure you aren’t left in the dark with our quick explainer.

What is the Cloud?

Simply, the Cloud is a set of servers hosted on the Internet, meaning that everything that was once processed and stored on your own physical servers can now be handled remotely.

The Cloud is primarily provided by the world’s leading technology companies, who have the resources to manage a series of global data centres on which the Cloud runs. These data centres contain huge physical computing capacity, allowing them to host millions of virtual machines which collectively form ‘the Cloud’ – quite literally, virtual ‘computers’ which function as if they were real, physical servers but that exist only on the internet. The three main cloud providers play host to a massive amount of our day-to-day online activities:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Google Cloud Platform

Between them, these three Cloud providers host Netflix, X, Airbnb, Paypal, Slack – the list goes on, covering almost every element of our online existences.

What does that mean for my organisation?

It means that rather than store your data (files, emails, calendars etc.) on your office, school or site premises, you can outsource storage to a cloud provider – with cloud experts like inTEC on hand to help you get there and maximise the benefits.

Cloud providers have vast resources available to invest in ensuring that your data is secure and that your access to what you need is seamless, enabling your organisation to achieve an unmatched digital experience.

Why should I want my data to be stored remotely?

The security benefits are truly transformational. Your organisation, irrespective of your dedication, simply cannot match Microsoft or Google’s investment in cyber security, and, given that half of British businesses were victims of a cyber attack in 2023, the importance of sealing off core vulnerabilities in your IT architecture cannot be overstated. Data centres themselves are physical locations, but these buildings are also subject to maximum security. Your data is  hidden away

under both digital and physical lock-and-key.

More noticeable on a day-to-day basis is the operational flexibility the Cloud offers. As your data could be stored anywhere from Dublin to Abu Dhabi, your team can access it from anywhere – and update files together, in real time. You will also notice that your IT is as reliable as can be – updates are automatic and extensive redundancy is in place should any element of the worldwide system go down.

Add all of this to cost-efficient, flexible payment plans, the big cut to your carbon footprint and the long-term saving made by removing your own physical hardware, and suddenly the clouds clear to reveal a future of affordable, secure, efficient IT that supports the working world of the future – which for many has already arrived.
